Abstract
Eloisa and Abelard is based on the story of an ill-fated pair of French lovers – and the hapless gods who put them up to it. The Archangel Gabriel and Goddess Venus, nominated by their fellow immortals to settle a longstanding bet between the classical and Christian gods, propose a game of temptation. Gabriel creates Abelard, a scholar of philosophy and ethics, to live the life of a true Christian, while Venus creates Eloisa, his precocious and nubile young pupil, as an attempt to sway him from that noble path.
