Abstract
According to James Knowlson, Beckett wrote at the same time that he was working on what he found to be the extremely painful task of translating into English. Given this context, this article studies as a drama not only of memory and repetition, but also of translation. On the biographical level, Beckett the self-translator is at this time conducting a return to an English which, on the level of personal history and early memories, can only remain originary for him, despite his decision to compose so often in French. Indeed, dramatizes English as the language of the personal archive, while also insisting on the exteriority of this idiom, giving us a "mother tongue" or "native language" which has been reified and mechanized in the most literal fashion.

Description: | Selon James Knowlson, Beckett a rédigé Krapp's Last Tape, en 1958, au moment même où il se livrait a la très pénible tâche de traduire L'innommable en anglais. Dans ce contexte, cet article propose d'examiner Krapp's Last Tape non seulement comme un drame de la memoire et de la repetition, mais aussi comme un drame de la traduction. Au niveau biographique, Beckett l'auto-traducteur effectue un retour vers une langue qui doit rester pour lui originaire (malgré sa décision d'écrire L'innommable en français, par exemple), et on peut voir cette circularité comme doublée par le ressassement obsessionnel de Krapp à l'égard de son propre passé – un passé réifié, bien sûr, en "bande", mais aussi en langue, en voix. Krapp's Last Tape nous offre l'anglais comme langue de l' archive, tout en insistant sur l'exteriorite de celui-ci ; une langue "matemelle" ou "natale" devient mécanisée de la façonla plus littérale. |
