Abstract
Experimenting with Shakespeare
The University of Warwick was founded in 1965 and is
thus approaching its fiftieth birthday. Its fifth decade has
been a time of bracing experimentation in teaching and
learning in general, but in the provision of Shakespeare
teaching in particular. Our location in the heart of what
the signs on the M40 assure us is ‘Shakespeare’s County’
has always guaranteed a special relationship between
the English and Theatre Studies departments and the
works of the national playwright. Stratford-upon-Avon
lies seventeen miles to the south and Warwick’s staff
and students have also long benefited from substantial
collaborations with the Royal Shakespeare Company,
the most recent of which is the ‘Teaching Shakespeare’
initiative (see links at the end of this article).
