Abstract
In this era of the internationalisation and globalisation of higher education, the imperative lies on researchers in the field to provide lenses with which we can try to describe and analyse what is happening in this rapidly shifting educational domain. The balance of power is changing to reflect an increase in both provision and quality of university education in regional hubs outside of the traditionally dominant regions of North America and Europe. Furthermore, the financial crises and economic constrictions experienced within these regions are taking their toll on higher education provision, leading to increased pressure on existing services and the potential for the global map of higher education to alter. Within these major geographical shifts, debates circulate concerning quality and equity of higher education provision, questions that cannot be fully addressed with a lens that views the subjects of university education as solely economic agents. What we need, and what these two edited collections provide, are lenses through which we can view the geographical and social complexities of higher education systems at local, national, regional and global levels.
