A composite joint is one in which slab reinforcement is provided across the joint so as to enhance its stiffness and resistance. The paper outlines European recommendations for such joints. General methods are given to determine moment resistance and stiffness. Rotation capacity can also be predicted, if governed by performance of the reinforcement. The safety concept for this property is also explained, because lack of adequate ductility can result in catastrophic failure. The recommendations apply to many different joint configurations. The paper shows that there are benefits from adopting 'contact-plate' connections, as already used in some parts of mainland Europe.
