The contemporary pressure on automotive manufacturers for cost reduction is endemic and is accelerating as a key factor in the choice of suppliers. The supplier selection process is predominantly audit based against recognised international quality management system standards. This paper proposes an optimised supplier selection process based on the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) model and compares and augments this philosophy with the new ISO/TS 16949 automotive quality management system standard.
