Various attempts are made to imp rove understanding of the problems when dealing with small rough objects or complicated features. The dynamic solid contact equivalent of Langevin equations are formulated with possible implications in counteracting stick-slip. New instruments aimed at getting more comprehensive data from surfaces are described and ways in which old ideas are being superseded by modem equivalents are described. The paper is divided into three sections: dynamics, instrumentation and processing.
