Abstract
Well defined microporous frameworks are the basis for the advantages of the conventional zeolites, however it is the origin of the limitations for the novel applications of zeolites too. The diffusion limitations and pore size restrictions pose a disadvantage for the use of conventional zeolites when bulky molecules are involved. Therefore various direct synthesis and post treatment methods have been developed to produce mesoporous zeolites by retaining the microporous framework at the same time. Approaches including the use of organic surfactants for the generation of mesopores and zeolite nanosheets, hard templating methods and removal of framework atoms are discussed. Novel approaches for the synthesis of hierarchically mesoporous and microporous zeolites have been reviewed.
