Abstract
Increasing instability, particularly in European countries grappling with major socioeconomic consequences of the recent economic crisis, characterises modern labour markets. The paradigm of lifelong employment with a single employer is no longer
credible and increasingly individuals face significant challenges in managing their career transitions as part of their lives. The profound economic changes that have occurred in
Europe over the last two decades have been precipitated by a range of factors including technological innovations, globalisation, economic crises, demographic shifts and increasing labour mobility. Consequently, increased temporary employment and precarious employment practices are likely to feature increasingly as part of the lives of many employees into the foreseeable future (Cedefop, 2010). The impact of these factors means that increasing numbers of people need to develop various coping strategies like career adaptability [referring to individuals’ ability to adapt to changing labour market requirements (Bimrose et al., 2011; Brown, Bimrose, Barnes, & Hughes, 2012) and/or
engaging in challenging work in ‘learning rich’ jobs is another way of achieving (Brown, 2014)]. Upskilling or reskilling becomes important for maintaining survival in a dynamic labour market and this may require regular investment in lifelong learning (Klein &
Osborne, 2007).
