Abstract
For the purpose of hard tissue augmentation mimicking the native bone the current challenge is to fabricate three dimensional bioceramic foams that can act as clinically viable scaffolds for new tissue regeneration. Construction of such templates must also meet the stringent and clinically demanding property specifications such as pore size, porosity, cellular interconnectivity, surface topography and adequate mechanical integrity to support the tissue in-growth when placed in-vivo. In conjunction with a description of fundamental properties of native bone, this chapter provides a comprehensive review of strategic selection of biomaterials and processes currently available to manufacture three dimensional bioceramic scaffolding foams for both load bearing (structural) and non-load bearing (non-structural) tissue engineering applications. Current processing approaches differ widely in the way the ceramic foams are conceived in order to optimize their parametric properties and is thus considered a pre-requisite to the success of the fabricated scaffolds in promoting formation of new mineralized bone.
