Abstract
This work comprises a collection of essays focusing on the relationship between political movements and the individual. In order to reinforce their interconnection, all are based on a common context, that of France between 1930 and the 1950s. It draws together the work of specialists in the fields of history, political science, philosophy, literature, film studies and art history, who address topics ranging from performances of Romain Rolland’s plays in the 1930s, the work of Jean Renoir, the experiences of three Jewish lawyers during the Occupation to an art exhibition on colonial Algeria in 1953.
Wardhaugh’s opening chapter considers the relationship between the people and their leaders in Romain Rolland’s Danton, performed in the 1930s, and how the play reflected debates within contemporary French society.
