Abstract
This study, located within the individual differences approach to the empirical science of religious education, assesses and clarifies the construct of spiritual wellbeing operationalised by Fisher’s Spiritual Health and Life-Orientation Measure (SHALOM). Data provided by 1,002 secondary school students in Australia, who completed SHALOM alongside a measure of Eysenck’s dimensional model of personality, found that higher levels of spiritual wellbeing were associated with high extraversion and low psychoticism. These findings suggest that spiritual wellbeing is located in psychological space which differentiates it both from established measures of religiosity and from established measures of subjective wellbeing. These data clarify the distinctive contribution made by SHALOM to the empirical science of religious education.
