SantAndrea in Vercelli, a foundation of regular canons of the order of St.-Victor in Paris, is the most complete of surviving Victorine abbeys. This essay considers the design of the thirteenth-century church as a specifically Victorine conception, developed in response to the demands of cult. It reconstructs the interior liturgical layout with reference to the Victorine customary, the Liber Ordinis Sancti Victoris Parisiensis, and defines the relationship between liturgy and the newly created architectural setting. Drawing on further liturgical sources from St.-Victor, it further proposes that the altar dedications and portal iconography were reflections of Victorine spirituality. Apart from revealing a new dimension of the church of SaintAndrea, this investigation can serve as a heuristic tool for the analysis of Victorine architecture in general.
