Abstract

This paper documents women's experiences of relinquishing a child for adoption in Ireland. This group have long been silenced and largely invisible. The focus of the research on which this paper is based was to provide a means for the women to share their experiences of the process of concealment and ostracism and to review the socially sanctioned solutions particular to Irish society. The issues that emerge encompass personal, cultural and societal influences and the implications for future policy and practice are explored.
