Abstract
We report uniaxial stress measurements and isotope-substitution effects on the optical absorption lines near 1685 and 1859 meV of the neutral self-interstitial I-0 in diamond. The data show that the observed D-2d point group of the centre is the mean position in a rapid tunnelling motion between two local energy minima of D-2 symmetry in the ground-state doublet, and two local energy minima of C-2v symmetry in the first-excited spin-singlet doublet of the centre. Comparisons are made with a centre predicted to have the same local structure in SiC. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
