Abstract
The increasing incidence of intercultural contact spurred by globalization has generated a strong impetus within foreign language teaching to help language learners understand how cultural differences become manifested in interaction. This paper focuses on the teaching of pragmatics and how explicit talk about pragmatics in the classroom can promote intercultural perspectives on language use. The analytical focus is on what this author refers to as “experience talk” and the affordances for learning which derive from such talk. The data reveals that experience talk is one valuable entry point for the reinterpretation of intercultural experiences and decentering from oneʼs own cultural assumptions.
