Abstract

One year after the publication of the genome sequence (Tribolium Genome Sequencing Consortium 2008) and of the accompanying Development Genes and Evolution special issue (Roth and Hartenstein 2008), it is time to move ahead and to assess the current state of research on the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum. At its biennial regional meeting, the European Tribolium research community discussed recent advances in understanding the biology of this beetle (University of Cologne, 27–29 July 2009, http://colonia. coleoptera.blogspot.com). The 50 participants, from 13 cities in seven countries, focused on developmental genetics topics from embryonic to postembryonic development, on evaluation of results in the context of insect and arthropod development and evolution, and on further additions to the genetic toolkit needed to study these phenomena.
