Abstract

In this article I propose that we are currently seeing the emergence of a new paradigm of cultural memory as disruptive, and I draw on the work of Jacques Rancière to analyse entanglements of memory, crisis and protest in contemporary Spain. Taking as my focal point the Puerta de Sol, a space that has embodied memory and dissent at various points in its history, I examine the depathologization of Spanish historical and cultural memory in El arquitecto y el relojero (2001) by Jerónimo López Mozo, and its repathologization in certain interpretations of the 15-M protests. I conclude with an examination of Los encargados (2012) by Jorge Galindo and Santiago Sierra, proposing that contradictory and disruptive approaches to memory and crisis reveal the extent to which memory studies are forward looking and as much about the future as the past.
