Abstract
Does biology matter for entrepreneurship? Over the past six decades, researchers have examined various factors that influence the tendency of people to engage in entrepreneurship including individual attributes (Baron, 2008; Cardon & Kirk, 2015; Simon, Houghton, & Aquino, 2000), contextual factors (Parker & van Praag, 2012; Zahra, Sapienza, & Davidsson, 2006), and industry characteristics (Shane, 2003). However, this rich literature has provided incomplete explanations about the drivers of entrepreneurship.
As biology influences many organizational phenotypes (Arvey, Li, & Wang, 2016; Song, Li, & Wang, 2015), researchers have suggested that this incompleteness may be due to the lack of research on the biological aspects of entrepreneurship (Nicos Nicolaou, Shane, Cherkas, Hunkin, & Spector, 2008; White, Thornhill, & Hampson, 2006). Recent research has therefore started examining the role of biological factors in influencing key entrepreneurial phenotypes such as the tendency to engage in entrepreneurship (Nicos Nicolaou, Shane, Cherkas, Hunkin, et al., 2008), opportunity recognition (Scott Shane & Nicos Nicolaou, 2015; Shane, Nicolaou, Cherkas, & Spector, 2010), entrepreneurial intention (Nicos Nicolaou & Shane, 2010) and entrepreneurial performance (Shane & Nicolaou, 2013). This research emphasizes that although biology may influence entrepreneurship it does not determine who becomes an entrepreneur (Nicos Nicolaou, Shane, Cherkas, Hunkin, et al., 2008; S. Shane & N. Nicolaou, 2015).
