Abstract
Transversal force on the fiber can cause the polarization coupling in the polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF). The position and amplitude of the transversal force can be gotten by measuring the coupling intensity so that the stress sensing can be realized. The transversal force loading system is designed, which consists of the pedestal, adjust stage, digital display ergometer, loading force probe, rotating stage, fiber holder and bracket. The influences of the amplitude, acting length and the direction of the transversal force on the coupling intensity in the with a 125μm diameter and the 2.1 mm beat length the PMF is studied. The experimental result indicates that the coupling intensity of the PMF is the best sensitive to the transversal force when the acting length is the odd times of the half of the beat length of PMF. The linear relation between the coupling intensity and amplitude of transverse force is proved in the part region and the polarization coupling in the PMF can be applied in the stress sensing.
