Abstract
Presented are the results of physical tests and a finite element analysis on the pin-bearing behaviour in notched pultruded material. A steel bolt of diameter 16 nun and notch clearances 0, 1 and 2 mm were chosen. Test specimens were cut from a 203x203x9.53 mm profile and the notch was at the web's mid-depth. Using a purpose-built bearing test rig load was applied until ultimate failure occurred. The I-DEAS finite element package was used to model the contact/friction problem. It was found that the presence of hole clearance and the friction/contact phenomenon was not simulated with accuracy. An improved picture of how the strain field changed with clearance and load was obtained from the test programme. The maximum radial strain was found to decrease substantially when there was clearance. New results confirmed that the maximum compressive stress was located away from the assumed bearing failure plane bringing into question the appropriateness of existing joint design procedures.
