Abstract
Electrochemically-deposited conducting polymers have been used in electronic noses to detect volatile organic compounds for a number of years. Here we investigate the use of poly(pyrrole) and poly(bithiophene) as the gate material of a ChemFET, and so produce an electrodeposited multi-polymer FET gray. Results show that these ChemFET devices are sensitive to ethanol and toluene vapour with a sensitivity coefficient of typically 0.8 muV/PPM and 8 PPM limit of detection. We believe that the response is associated with a modulation of the workfunction between the polymer and the gate oxide.
