Abstract
The problem of identifying regions of tensile stress on the outer surface of an immersed tube, made by post-tensioning a series of pre-cast concrete segments, has been resolved by testing a three dimensional photoelastic model. Information about the stress distribution in the transverse section has been used to develop an elastic strain energy solution which confirms the existence of unacceptable stresses in the original design and enables suitable improvements to be suggested.
