Abstract
The bronze doors of San Marco are the most extensive program of doors to have survived from a mediaeval church. They are signed and dated 1300 by the Venetian goldsmith Bertuccius who also executed a rock-crystal reliquary for the church of Santa Croce in Florence. The door programme is coherent and forms part of the deliberate artistic policy which saw the extension and embellishment of San Marco after the conquest of Constantinople in 1204. The doors present complicated problems related to the influence of Antique models, the meaning of the doors' program and their role in Venice's new identity in the aftermath of the fall of Byzantium.
