Abstract
When defining a model for use with the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method, it is necessary to discretise the problem into rectilinear cells. The size of these cells has an effect on the numerical results. This paper quantifies these effects experimentally, using metallic, cubic structures. The results justify the use of a lambda /10 cell size, giving <3dB variation. These results also show little gain in using smaller cell sizes than this. An interpolation method is introduced to enhance the FDTD calculations, allowing cell sizes as large as <lambda>/5 to be used, thereby reducing computation time and resource requirements.
