Abstract
This paper presents a generic firm classification for global new product development (NPD), based on an industrial survey and personal interviews with NPD executives in the electronics, automotive and aerospace sectors. Two case studies illustrate how this classification works in practice.
The classification has been developed as part of the project CETGI (Concurrent Engineering and Teamwork across Global Industries), an assessment tool for firms developing products within a global context.
Based on their position within the classification matrix, global organisations can realise specific requirements and improvement opportunities for NPD including organisational structures, co-ordination mechanisms and supporting infrastructure. This classification gives management practitioners an overall view of alternative strategic positions for long-term planning.
