Abstract
Some physical properties of a series of ternary alkali stannosilicate glasses of general mol% composition xR(2)O. (50-x)SnO.50SiO(2) (R=Li, Na, K, Rb) and xRO. (50-x)SnO.50SiO(2) (R=Mg, Ca) have been determined. The manner in which the proerties change with modifier type and concentration illustrates the influence of size and ionic potential of the third component. It also shows the importance of the binary stannous silicate matrix in that the inferred presence of 3-coordinated oxygen changes the way in which the extra oxygen provided by the modifiers is incorporated in the structure.
