Abstract
Capacitance transducers have been investigated for ultrasonic generation and detection in gases at elevated pressures; these could be employed as an inspection system to test gas pipelines non-destructively. It is shown that sensitivity and bandwidth are both affected by pressure. Tests in through-transmission indicate that improved coupling at high gas pressures leads to improved ultrasonic signals in plates of Perspex and aluminium.
