Abstract
The need to create large enclosed areas, unobstructed by intermediate supports? has led to a search for new structural forms and materials. Improvements in strength and durability of industrial fabrics have encouraged designers to make more use of such materials and produce what is now known as 'fabric architecture-a new type of built environment in which visual lightness and aesthetics predominate. Fabric structures fall into a broad category of non-conventional roofing forms known as 'lightweight tension structures', which also include prestressed cable nets, cable trusses and girders, This papers presents an overview of the design and application of fabric membranes, though much of the discussion is also relevant to prestressed cable nets.
