Abstract
The experiment described in this paper measures the dispersion of a Rayleigh wave on an extruded aluminum bar. A pulsed Nd:YAG laser line source is used to generate a broadband Rayleigh wave which is detected using a modified Michelson interferometer with a high bandwidth (80 MHz). As the system is broadband changes in the form of the Rayleigh wave due to dispersion can be studied. The system is also entirely non-contact and non-destructive. Changes in the grain structure from surface to bulk due to extrusion can have very dramatic effects on the dispersion of the Rayleigh wave. Subtle surface effects that are often neglected when constructing test blocks have been demonstrated to be very important.
