Abstract
The first part of this paper reported the initial findings of a study using a 400 W pulsed Nd-YAG laser to drill holes in a glass-matrix composite (GMC) comprising SIC fibres in a borosilicate glass matrix. In that work, the effect on hole depth and induced damage of various pulse waveforms (in terms of pulse energy, duration and intensity) were investigated. This work continues the study with the same material bur changes from drilling to cutting, and examines the influence of different process configurations. Trials are performed to optimise the type and pressure of the assist gas, the focal point of the beam with respect to the material surface and the variation of maximum cut speed with plaque thickness.
The gas assist trials show that the use of oxygen is to be avoided owing to oxidation of the molten matrix glass; this situation is greatly improved by the use of nitrogen, but a more cost-effective solution that produces similar cut quality is to use air under 2 bar pressure. Adjustment of the point of focus with respect to the surface of the plaque by varying the focal depth and beam expansion telescope setting shows that there is little influence on penetration with variations of up to +/-2 mm. A maximum cut speed of approximately 60 mm min(-1) is identified for 7 mm thick material, rising to over 750 mm min(-1) for 1.5 mm thick plaques. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
