Abstract
Because of the short range nature of the structural order in glass, it is difficult to establish an unambiguous picture of the distribution of atoms, even in the nearest co-ordination spheres, by means of one structural technique alone. Different techniques can give distinct information about individual elements in a glass or about specific attributes of the local structure, e.g. site symmetry, coordination, or neighbour atom type. Attempts to define the structures of two glass systems are described to illustrate the benefits (and drawbacks) of the use of complementary techniques.
