Abstract
Hospital based social work concerned with physical health remains marginalised in analysis of practice. However, this article presents evidence of its strategic importance - as social work - in contributing to a more equitable experience of health in Britain. The constraints it faces in making such a contribution - notably, inadequate resourcing, conservative tendencies within practice and a disadvantageous organisational position are then explored. Finally, current developments within local authorities, social services departments and hospital social work itself which offer hospital social work a chance to realise its potential, are discussed.
