Abstract
This paper attempts an evaluation of current Information Systems research practice using the UK and USA as examples. It does this by investigating the limited evidence available as to (i) the topics being researched and (ii) the research methods being employed. This investigation is undertaken in the context of (i) the appropriate usage of alternative research methods given the focus and objective of the research and (ii) the relevance of the topics of study. Appropriate usage of methods is assessed utilising an existing taxonomy of research methods (Galliers & Land, 1987; Galliers, 1991, 1992). A topic's relevance is assessed by comparing research activity with the issues identified by practitioners as being of importance to them.
The intention is not to be prescriptive regarding the choice of research method or topic nor to argue for increased rigour at the expense of relevance or vice versa. The intention is to fuel a debate on this important subject with a view to improving research practice amongst the Information Systems academic community. This is done by posing a number of Debating Points that arise from the argument as it unfolds. The hope is that the debate that ensues will lead to a greater consensus regarding key issues facing Information Systems researchers, with impoved scholarship being a direct result.
