Abstract
A scanning electron microscope based microindentor has been developed to measure the interfacial micromechanics of fibre reinforced ceramic matrix composites, using the fibre push down and push through techniques. High magnification imaging of small fibres (diameter <15 mum), as they are pushed, is possible. Applied load and indentor displacement are measured continuously during indentation to resolutions of 1 mN and 10 nm, respectively. Maximum load capability is 20 N, enabling application to a large range of composite materials. The interfacial debond fracture surface energy G(i) and frictional shear stress tau of a range of SiC fibre reinforced glass and glass ceramic matrices are reported. Oxidation behaviour of the calcium aluminosilicate/Nicalon interface and associated micromechanical responses are discussed. Interface presynthesis via fibre coating and subsequent effects on both macro- and micromechanical behaviour are illustrated. Finally, an attempt to validate experimentally the dependence of matrix microcracking level on tau has been made.
