Abstract
In this paper we analyse the Landau-Ginzburg (LG) free energy expansion for a complex order parameter in the presence of currents. Making use of simple topological arguments we obtain expressions for the critical current density, j(c), as a function of temperature T for both first and second order phase transitions. We demonstrate the cross-over for the critical exponent of j(c) versus T - T(c) from 3/2 to 1 on going from a second order transition to the tricritical point.
