Abstract
Highly pure, homogeneous and nanosize ZrTiO4 powder was prepared by thermally treating a gel precursor from specially formulated ZrO2 and TiO2 sols using a novel sol-gel method. Studies by X-ray diffraction and simultaneous differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetry (TGA) showed that crystallisation of ZrTiO4 powder occurs at 400-degrees-C. This temperature is the lowest to date for any reported synthesis route. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies showed agglomerated granular morphology for the oven dried gel and also thermally treated (at 700-degrees-C) samples. Energy dispersive analysis (EDX) using bulk and point analysis methods showed the Zr and Ti ratio to be almost-equal-to 1.0 for both the gel precursor and heat treated sample.
