Abstract
The development of the techniques of photoelectron and Auger electron diffraction as means of determining aspects of the structure of surfaces are surveyed in the form of a historical review. Key features in the development are identified, and their significance described briefly. Different aspects covered include high kinetic energy forward scattering experiments aimed at determining bond angles within adsorbed molecular species and structural properties of epitaxial films, backscattering experiments aimed at quantitative adsorbate structure determination, Auger electron diffraction including recent renewals of interest in the method and its proper interpretation, and direct methods of structure determination including the idea of photoelectron holography. Some comments are included on the possible future applications of these techniques.
