Abstract
While much initial organizational identity (OI) scholarship has been conducted under realist, essentialist assumptions, more recently considerable attention has been paid to social constructionist, process-oriented approaches that allow for a more dynamic perspective of OI that emphasizes its fluidity and contextual aspects. However, in their extreme form, process views appear to leave little room for any form of - even transitional - identity stability; and essentialist views deny the potential for continuous identity redefinition and constructive identity work. Without attempting to make grand ontological claims about OI, in this paper we advance embodied realism as an approach that recognizes both movement and stability in identity work. By means of an empirical analysis of one company's use of embodied metaphors - a method of identity work that exhibits the main tenets of embodied realism - to literally construct representations of its organizational identity, we demonstrate the relevance of embodied realism for OI and the effectiveness of embodied metaphors to surface key aspects of OI in practice.
