Abstract
This paper describes the new philosophy, development and operation of the body of modules subsumed under the heading of Information Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Technology at the University of Central England in Birmingham
In order to be able to succeed in today's competitive environment. Businesses need complete, real-time collaboration across their supply chain. It's the only way to get the organizations products and services to market faster and cheaper than the competition. Business-to-Business (B2B) collaboration is more important than ever before. These services are developed using Internet connectivity and e-procurement applications, which are based on the principles of object oriented approach
Furthermore customer are demanding the Internet platform be further augmented by supporting vibrant multimedia objects. However the object model, has a shortfall, in that, the architecture cannot adequately handle rich data such as video and audio, which are characteristic of typical web content. More importantly the object architecture cannot support data from many different databases distributed -over multiple servers, which is the natural model, for the Internet and B2B applications
Due to the demands for continuous improvement in the delivery and quality of education for Information Engineering, brought about by Industry and driven market forces, the course was modified to contain material which promotes an open systems approach by incorporating the XML architecture, which enables the entire World Wide Web to be transformed into a single all-encompassing database. (software AG The XML company). These applications form the foundations of Business to Business solutions and support client-driven solutions which will enable businesses to drive towards their goals
Following this change in the marketplace the Information Engineering Group set out to design and develop a conceptual framework of modules subsumed under the term, Object-Oriented, associative approach, to the designing of B2B XML Integrated open System applications (OBXIS). This framework, implements a range of teaching and learning strategies that would accommodate the flexibility required by such a scheme.
The range of modules provide an integrated path taking students through the range of operational, tactical and strategic issues involved in Information Engineering within engineering and manufacturing context.
In addition to describing the modules that have been specially designed for teaching the new philosophy of e-commerce, the paper also identifies the new technology and philosophy the university has adopted in order to support the teaching of these modules. It further describes the activities that have been designed to maximise student responsibility for distant learning.
