Abstract
The Mixed alkali modified borosilicate base glass used in the vitrification of high level radioactive waste (HLW) has been mixed with different trivalent oxide additives at a number of concentrations, between 2 and 12 mol%. Ultrasonic wave velocities have been measured at room temperature by the pulse-echo-overlap method and the elastic properties of the glasses have been determined in order to extend our understanding of the structural role of the additives. It has been found that there is sufficient difference, i.e. greater than experimental error, between the different series of glasses, which may allow, potential detection of segregation in the waste-loaded glass in the melter and the storage canisters. It is also shown that Al-3divided by acts as a network intermediate, whereas Bi-3divided by acts as a network modifier in these glasses.
