Abstract
With the increase in life expectancy, diabetes mellitus is going to become one of the most important factors in public health over the next few decades. As a systemic multicomponent disease, diabetes affects the majority of organs by interacting with the aging process, which it exacerbates and accelerates. Diabetes is therefore one of the determinants of vulnerability in the elderly. In this review we shall examine the various components of this multifaceted vulnerability. Management of the elderly diabetic should not be confined to controlling blood glucose, lipid profile and blood pressure. It should involve instituting a global and multidisciplinary approach of prevention and care, identifying cases of vulnerability. The objectives of metabolic targeting will depend on this diagnosis.
