Abstract
This is an essay, written purely for purposes of intellectual exploration of a topic of discussion between myself and London art critic Jeremy Hunt after we co-authored ‘Public Art in the 21st Century’ for the Grove Art Online Dictionary (2011), and ‘Public Art in the New Millennium’ in Deslocações: exílio, topologia, deslocalização, ed. Gabriela Vaz‐Pinheiro and Miguel Costa, Universidade do Porto, Porto (2011). It defines the meaning of counter-monument as a central term in the, then, discourse of public art.
