Abstract

In the early part of the 4th century BC the Achaean koinon issued a coin series with a female head with an exceptional hairstyle on the obverse. Scholars have often thought it appropriate to identify the figure with Demeter Panachaia, who was especially venerated by the koinon, but comparison with contemporary and later Demeter coin types is sufficient to prove that the goddess of the Achaean koinon has none of Demeter’s particular features. Furthermore, the top-knot hairstyle is appropriate for maidens and virgin goddesses. On the other hand, identification with Artemis Laphria, put forward by other scholars, should also be ruled out, since the cult of Laphria was introduced into Achaea in the time of Augustus. A possible candidate could be Artemis Triklaria, who possessed two sanctuaries in Patrae – on the acropolis and in the country – and it was probably the first of these that later housed the cult statue of Laphria.
