Abstract

The destruction inflicted by the Heruli in 267 AD was an event of major importance which meant the abrupt and premature end to many of the city’s ancient institutions. Civic coinage and the issue of tokens were also suspended. The tokens recovered from the destruction debris in or in the vicinity of the Stoa of Attalos prove to relate to festivals and stand out as significant material testimonies of the festival experience of the participating groups. The social dimensions of festival experience were shaped by tokens. By interacting with civic memories on one hand, and traditions of the elite on the other, tokens enabled the functioning of festival communities. Had the tokens not been preserved, a great portion of human interactions, social relationships and activities related to festivals would be lost forever.
