Abstract
Theoretical discussions of world literature do not often position it alongside theories of postcolonialism. However, colonialism was embedded in theories of world literature from the very beginning. Goethe's vision of Weltliteratur was never an innocent literary conception, as it was associated with colonial activities in more ways than one. World literature, either as “masterpieces” or “window on the world”, cannot be dissociated from political and social inequality, nor remain intact as a purely literary paradigm. Important postcolonial theorists such as Edward Said, Homi Bhabha, and Bill Ashcroft all noted the close connection between world literature and postcolonial studies. Scholars such as Fredric Jameson even argue that postcolonial literature is literature with a real potential of becoming world literature, which will ultimately replace postmodernist literature as the carrier of universal human experience.
