Abstract
A contemporary Italian manuscript translation (Johns Hopkins Sheridan Libraries, Milton S. Eisenhower Library, Special Collections, MSB 135) lends a new perspective on the early reception of the Satyre Menippée (1593/94), one of the most notorious pamphlets of the French Wars of Religion (1562-1598), which is itself presented as a French translation from an intercepted Italian manuscript. This article offers a detailed analysis of the ways in which the anonymous, Italian “Satira Menippea” handles the multilingual aspects of its source text and the trope of the pseudo-translation, in comparison with the printed English translation of 1595. Unlike the adaptive approach of the latter, the more sober, functional character of the Italian translation and its preservation of any Latin passages suggest that this handwritten version was probably not intended for publication. It is argued, instead, that the “Satira menippea” was associated with the foreign intelligence gathering on le cose di Francia for the benefit of an Italian city state such as Venice or Florence, or the Papacy in Rome.
