Abstract
Cherry tomatoes are popular due to their small size, good flavour and high nutritional quality. Appearance and flavour are preserved using a number of postharvest techniques, including low temperature, light irradiation and advanced packaging. For light irradiation technique, far-red light and blue light have been applied to some vegetables and fruits, but little is known about their effects on nutritional quality of cherry tomato, so the aim of this research is to investigate the benefits that occur in terms of health-promoting components. Mature-green cherry tomatoes were exposed to far-red (710 nm) and blue (430 nm) light irradiation at 15°C and 85% relative humidity for 33 days. The effects of light treatment on fruit quality and nutritional quality were investigated during storage time. Results showed that the weight loss of cherry tomatoes at day 25 in far-red light treatment was 0.75% lower than that in control (darkness). The accumulation of lycopene and beta-carotene was increased by far-red light when compared with control, whereas little effect was found in blue light treatment. Blue light irradiation inhibited the decrease of lutein at the end of storage. However, the contents of total phenolics and flavonoid were not affected by light irradiation compared with darkness. These findings suggested that far-red light irradiation is an effective application to prolong shelf-life and maintain nutritional quality of cherry tomato during postharvest storage.
