Abstract
I put Martha Nussbaum’s interpretation of the Aristotelian conception of the good life in conversation with the “perfectionist” readings elaborated by Michel Foucault, Pierre Hadot and Stanley Cavell. I argue that these readings provide helpful insights into the difficulty that Martha Nussbaum raises in the appendix to the third part of The Fragility of Goodness: how can we make sense of the tension in Aristotle’s work between a fully “human” model of the good life, as developed in most of his writings, and his claims, in Nicomachean Ethics X, regarding the excellence and perfection (the “divine” character) of the theoretical life? After exploring several possible answers, in the conclusion of this paper I submit a working hypothesis that allows us to conceive in an original way the relation between the “human” and the “divine” in Aristotle’s ethics.
