Abstract
If to become an orthopaedic surgeon, everyone had to run a 1-mile race, it would be generally agreed that all candidates should begin at the same starting line. However, this would fail to take into account that women and underrepresented minorities have already run a marathon before they stepped to that line. In the myth of meritocracy that is woven into the fabric of orthopaedic surgery1, many believe that they won a fair race because they ran faster than everyone else. We blame the individuals whom we “bested” for not having the scores, research experience, or drive for success. However, we ignore the fact that many (although not all) accepted applicants have highly resourced undergraduate and medical school backgrounds—research powerhouses where mentors and leadership opportunities abound.
